Yesterday was my birthday. I was having a kind of down day, feeling a bit bored. Last night, though, my wife asked a few folks over for cake and ice cream. As they sang Happy Birthday, my 3-year-old son, Caleb, brought literal tears to my eyes with his off-key singing, "Happy Birthday, Daddy." That puts it all into perspective.

We took Caleb fishing yesterday. It was his first fishing trip, and our first in years. We were hoping that he would catch a fish or two, but it was not to be. He did have fun, though. It seemed that he had more fun running around and throwing rocks into the water than he did fishing. That boy is amazingly good at casting for a three year old. He can throw his hook out quite a distance. He told me before we left that he was going to catch a fish for dinner. Maybe next time.
